About Kathleen
Many of you reading this may have met Kathleen at one of Mark Rashid's clinics. For those of you that don't know her, she has been working as Mark's full time assistant from 2004 through to 2006 and travelling with him across America and the U.K. During this time, Kathleen also wrote her first book, "In the Company of Horses: A Year on the Road with Horseman Mark Rashid". (And for those of you who have never come across Mark Rashid I would thoroughly recommend a visit to his web site at www.markrashid.com to find a little more about this quiet, patient and quite extraordinary horseman.)
Kathleen grew up with horses in the American Midwest. As a teenager she competed and taught riding successfully to the point where she was working professionally as a rider and trainer. After several years of training horses for a living, Kathleen attended college where she studied English Literature.
Before completing her degree, Kathleen moved to Colorado , and bought a young grey Thoroughbred gelding as a resale project. Little did she know how that one act would change profoundly what she thought she understood about horses. Ashcroft was not like all the other horses she'd run into over the years, in that he didn't care who she was or how much she thought she knew about horses. Kathleen and Ashcroft fought for two years, accomplishing little.
It was about that time that Kathleen heard about a horseman named Mark Rashid who was scheduled to do a clinic in her area. Kathleen decided to take Ashcroft to see him to see if maybe he could sort the horse out. At that clinic, Kathleen learned that horses often are trying, even if it doesn't look like it. She learned that Ashcroft had been trying all along, but because what he offered didn't look like what she expected it to, she hadn't been able to see it, and that's where all the fighting had come from. To get along with Ashcroft, the first thing Kathleen had to do was stop fighting.
Kathleen learned a lot while she worked with Mark; not just about training horses, but about the business of clinicing, writing and life as well. It's all the same thing, in the end. Mark continues to fill the role of Kathleen's mentor, and she has the privilege of counting him among her closest friends.
Mark also introduced Kathleen to the martial art of Aikido, which she continues to study and practice, along with the art of Tai Chi. She is constantly looking for ways to apply the tenants of Aikido and Tai Chi to teaching and horsemanship and life.

Venue details
Higher Langdon Barn, North Bovey, Newton Abbot, Devon TQ13 8RR
Our farm is situated in the heart of the beautiful Dartmoor National Park . The arena we will be using for the clinic is outdoors with an all-weather surface and a fantastic view! For those bringing horses, if you have energy to spare outside clinic hours the hacking is superb.
Directions
From Bovey Tracey:
Head towards Widecombe-in-the-Moor, eventually passing Haytor Rock on your right (3.5 miles approx.). Go over the next cattle grid. This is Hemsworthy Gate. Keep heading towards Widecombe, then after 400 yards take the next right turn signposted Hound Tor and Manaton. This junction is called Harefoot.
Follow this road – do not turn off it. Go past Hound Tor on your right, then after about 1 mile and past a red phone box on your left at Heatree X. Carry straight on, past a left turn to Vogwell and a right turn to Easdon, then another unsigned left turn.
20 yards past the unsigned left turn is the right turn you want. It is marked with a no through road sign. Go up the hill, past a black barn on the right, then the first house you come to (barn conversion on the right) is Higher Langdon Barn.
From Moretonhampstead:
Take the Princetown road. Three miles out of Moretonhampstead you pass the Miniature Pony Centre on your left. Go another half a mile and take the big left turn signed Manaton. Stay on this road – pass a red post box at Hookner X, then take the next left marked by a no through road sign. Go up the hill, past a black barn on the right, then the first house you come to (barn conversion on the right) is Higher Langdon Barn.
